Rhetorical Devices
As we have seen, analyzing rhetoric means considering the ways an author addresses the rhetorical situation, and the different kinds of appeals that are embedded in a text. But rhetoric also looks closely at the way a writer uses language--the patterns of word use, repetitions, and contrasts, and the imagery and figures of speech that make a piece of writing or a speech come to life. In this section we will look more closely at some of these patterns and figures, which are known by the term rhetorical devices.
